Laser resurfacing can improve concerns such as sun damage, uneven tone, rough texture, fine lines, and skin laxity. But if you have started researching your options, you have probably encountered an alphabet soup of technologies and brand names, such as CO2, MOXI®, HALO®, CoolPeel®, and ResurFX™, but which one is actually best?

At AderaMD Aesthetics in Inverness, Florida, we believe the answer depends less on the laser’s name and more on your skin, your goals, and the expertise behind your treatment plan. Our physician-led team brings more than 15 years of aesthetic medicine experience to patients throughout Citrus County, using medical-grade protocols tailored to the individual.

In this article, we help you choose the right laser resurfacing treatment for your needs.

Don’t Choose a Laser Based on the Name

It is easy to assume that the most recognizable laser must be the best. However, names such as MOXI, HALO, CoolPeel, and ResurFX refer to different technologies and platforms. But behind these names is the technology that actually matters.

Lasers use specific wavelengths that interact with your skin differently. MOXI, for example, uses a 1927 nm wavelength, while a CO2 laser operates at approximately 10,600 nm. These wavelengths travel to different depths and interact with different targets in the skin.

Depending on the technology and settings, laser resurfacing may address pigmentation, texture, fine lines, laxity, or multiple concerns. That means there is no universally “best” laser.

The better question is: What are you trying to accomplish?

Understand What Your Treatment Actually Does

Before proceeding with laser resurfacing, have a detailed conversation with your provider. You should understand the who, what, how, when, and why of your treatment. Ask what the laser targets, how deeply it treats your skin, why that particular technology is appropriate for your concerns, how many sessions you may need, and what you can expect during recovery.

At AderaMD Aesthetics, this education is an important part of the client experience. We do not believe you should feel rushed or pressured into a procedure. You should have the information you need to make an informed decision about your skin.

Look Beyond the Device

Technology matters, but so does the person operating it. Ideally, your provider should be able to show you before-and-after photographs of patients treated within the practice who had concerns similar to yours. They should also be prepared to discuss typical healing, expected results, downtime, and the number of treatments recommended for your specific protocol.

Even the same device can produce different treatment experiences depending on the settings and technique used. A gentler MOXI treatment, for example, is very different from a more advanced protocol that addresses pigmentation, texture, and tone more intensively.

Consider Results and Downtime Together

Treatment intensity matters. A full-field ablative CO2 laser or an erbium laser treatment such as TRL can produce dramatic, long-lasting resurfacing results that last up to 5 years. However, that intensity comes with a very different recovery experience. Depending on the treatment, wound care may be necessary for roughly the first two weeks, while post-procedure redness can persist much longer and, in some cases, for several months.

A less aggressive fractional treatment may involve considerably less downtime but require multiple sessions. Neither approach is automatically “better.” Your desired results, skin, lifestyle, and willingness to accommodate recovery all matter.

So, Is CO2 the Best Laser?

Not necessarily.

CO2 can be an excellent resurfacing technology for the right patient and the right concern, but choosing treatment based solely on a laser’s reputation misses what matters most.

The real question is: Who is holding the handpiece?

Take MOXI as an example. It can be performed using preset settings for a relatively gentle treatment, while an experienced NP or physician may use more advanced settings and individualized protocols to address pigment, texture, and tone more intensively. Who may perform specific laser treatments also varies according to state regulations.
